Analysis on music video “We Belong Together”
“We Belong Together” is a single in the album The Emancipation of Mimi. The song is written by Mariah Carey, who is also the singer. The producers are said to be well-known, who are Poyser, The Legendary Traxter. Because of them, the song exhibits great influence of hip hop and R&B.
Having so many celebrities enrolled the single received four nominations In Grammy. However, only won “best R&B song” and “Best R&B Vocal Performance”
The story is about a girl named Mariah, she had a boyfriend before.
When the protagonist sees her former boyfriend, as she is preparing for her wedding. As she marches down the aisle, the protagonist debates whether she belongs with her former boyfriend or her fiancé (played by Eric Roberts). Once she reaches the altar, she catches sight of her former lover who is watching the wedding from a distance. She runs from the ceremony and into his arms, shocking everyone at the wedding.
There are several images in the video that I like. During her way to the altar, the protagonist recalled the scene they made acquaintance. This is scene is black and white so audience can distinguish clearly. On her way to the altar, the director constantly flips scenes between her and her boyfriend, which makes audience feel more and more nervous. Not until the moment she gives her hand to her fiancé, something occurred to her mind and finally decides to run away with her boyfriend. The director makes the climax point right there when the emotional watchers ‘hearts are beating fastest for her. Overall, her emotion is expressed from her face very well. On the other hand, the boyfriend |s behaviour is also very notable. When his girlfriend is rushing towards him, he shows no hesitation and just takes her with himself firmly.
The last scene in the video is the soul for the whole video. In this scene, the camera seems to be far from them. The girl sitting besides her boyfriend, wearing her wedding dress, is very happy from her inner heart.
Their car is running in a straight mountain road with no other car emerging. Though their future life is invisible, sentimental watchers can still believe that they are running towards their happiness.
Lyrics used in this video are very simple and daily-life-like. But it is very evidential. A sad woman will never be so poetic and use many figurative languages including Mary Shelley.
Through all those technique used in this music video, the theme of their romantic love is admired by thousands of hundreds of fans. That’s why the song is so popular and the first one in history that has over 200 million people in a single week.
